What is Discipleship?
One of the pillars of Grace City LA is our special discipleship training curriculum. We firmly believe in the importance of making strong disciples, as taught in Matthew 28:19-20. We believe that discipleship is not about encouraging believers to attend Sunday service or a life group. Rather, discipleship is producing healthy, knowledgeable, and worshipful Christians through an intentional and personal mentor-student model, much like Jesus did with the disciples in the Gospels. In this way, students are carefully guided, equipped, and encouraged so that they know what it means to be an excellent Christian. Discipleship is key to building healthy Christians who in turn create a healthy local church.
How Does it Work?
Students (disciples) are paired with a skilled mentor who teaches and models Christian living, based on the church's 11-Lesson, 15 to 16 week, course that covers the essentials of the Christian faith. Typically, the group meets once a week for about 1 1/2 hours at locations convenient to the group. Topics that are covered include faith, prayer, reading the Bible, evangelism, giving, spiritual gifts, the ordinances (baptism and communion), and many other important lessons. Students will not only learn the theology behind these foundational Christian practices, but will also be shown how to put these principles into action through helpful homework and group field assignment. Upon completion, disciples will understand how to excel in their personal walk with the Lord, in their service to the church, and in their outreach to the world around them.
What is the End Goal?
1. Maturity: By learning the fundamentals of the Christian faith through the mentor's teaching and modeling, disciples will understand everything they need to know to become a well-rounded, fully developed Christian who pleases God in all ways. In other words, they will know what it means to be a mature, godly believer.
2. Mission-minded: Through the discipleship training, disciples will see the importance of not keeping the faith to themselves, but reaching others around them who need to come to Jesus Christ for salvation and to be built up in the faith. Disciples will be challenged to reach others in evangelism.
3. Multiplying: The end goal is for the disciples to take on other men and women to disciple them. The discipleship training will train students to reach and mentor other people with the same life changing tools that lead to mature Christian living. We seek to make disciples who will multiply themselves.
Discipleship training is available seasonally and based on request. For more information on how to join a discipleship group, contact us at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
