WHY GRACE CITY CHURCH?
According to a 2010 US Census, the population of Los Angeles is about 3.8 million people. Various statistics document that an average of 20-30% of Los Angeles identifies with the Christian/Protestant faith, while the remaining numbers are either of another religion or non-religious. Among the many non-religious people, whether they adhere to any sort of spiritual beliefs or not, are the Millennials (born between 1981 to 1996), who are the ones shaping the culture and the future of Los Angeles, which is everything from the entertainment to the financial industry.
A Barna Research documents some of the disconnect that has happened between millennials and the church in "Six Reasons Young People Leave Church." One of the reason the millennials leave church is that the experience of Christianity is shallow. They say that "church is boring" (31%), "faith is not relevant to my career or interest" (24%), and "the Bible is not taught clearly or often enough" (23%). Another reason is that they perceive the church to be "unfriendly toward those who doubt." These people feels they cannot ask "most pressing questions in church" (36%) and "have significant intellectual doubts about faith" (23%). According to Barna as well, 59% of millennials raised in church have dropped out. Only 2 in 10 of millennial churchgoers think church is important.
The unique purpose of Grace City Church is this: To make grace and truth relevant to a new generation in Los Angeles. Through a mixture of strong Bible teaching, apologetics, and grace-filled outreach, we want to eliminate some of the barriers that have stopped people from coming to Jesus and the church, and to introduce them afresh to God's powerful word. In a time when depression, vanity, and confusion is high, especially among the unchurched in the city, salvation through the gospel is the only hope. And it is our purpose to connect them with that hope.
Mission and Vision
Our mission is to raise up new disciples who worship God, grow in faith, and reach the unchurched with the gospel. In other words, our mission is to bring people to faith in Jesus through the gospel and to equip them so that they can be salt and light in their social and vocational spheres.
Our vision is to create mature, missional, and multiplying Christians who are empowered to reach and equip other new disciples, thereby bringing many of the unchurched in the city to come to know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. We want to raise up disciplemaking leaders (which includes pastors and church planters) who will be sent out into other cities and into the world in order to replicate our values, mission, and vision. We envision the transformation of the social, vocational, and artistic life of Los Angeles as a result of new lives affected by the Holy Spirit.
Because God's word is inerrant, infallible, sufficient, and authoritative, we value teaching and preaching Scripture thoroughly (2 Timothy 3:16). Therefore, we preach through books of the Bible, verse-by-verse, chapter-by-chapter in a manner that is informative, engaging, and applicable. We believe God uses His word to transform lives when we engage people with it.
Because the mission of the church is the Great Commission, we value discipling believers (Matthew 28:19-20). We do so through a method of teaching and modeling that is designed to make create mature, missional, and multiplying Christians. The end goal would be to train disciples who can, in turn, disciple others.
Because Jesus commanded the church to reach unbelievers, we value evangelism (Mark 16:15). We are focused on preaching the gospel to the lost through weekly endeavors into the city. The methods and point of contact vary, but all our outreach efforts have the end goal of introducing people to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
Because Christians are spiritual brothers and sisters in the Lord, we value fellowship. We gather to exhort, care for, and support one another in grace and in truth (John 17:23). We long to build a culture of love, grace, and kindness in all that we do in order to be a testimony of the Holy Spirit's transforming work to the world.
Because Christ modeled prayer for us, we pray personally and communally to exercise our faith in God, conform our will to His, and see Him move in our lives, in the church, and in the city (1 Thessalonians 5:17). We are a church that prays, depending on the Lord to build the church and to bring spiritual awakening to people in the city.
